is there any difference in the shape of the conical flavor disks and the spherical disks? if so, what is the difference?

The shape is the same.  What is different is the size.  The spherical flavor discs are just a bit bigger and will not fall in.  The spherical joint does not go all the way down with the grind like a full female joint does.
