What is an ice catch or ice pink?

There are many different styles, but essentially an ice catch is part of the water pipe that allows ice to be put in without it hitting your downstream or percs. The pinch style is probably the most popular, where the glassblower puts in a few indentations near the mouthpiece that will hold the ice up. Another style is the doughnut or ring ice catch, which is literally just a doughnut or thick ring-shaped piece of glass that functions the same way. Putting ice in your water pipe really cools off the smoke or vapor!

How do glassblowers handmake color? Or how is handmade color made in glass?

The blower will start with clear or some color they love.

If the blower is starting with clear and do it completely from scratch they will add minerals to the glass and mix it.   This takes a long time to do.  Many times glass sits in a crucible for days so the minerals can mix in the glass.  There is also off-gassing from some of the minerals so it is best to do it in a well-ventalated area.

Many blowers will mix a few colors together making a color they want.  This is done by just mixing and mixing by hand in the flame.  This produces a small amount of one off-color.

What is the difference between raw Chinese and raw American boro?

Glass is made from sand.  The main difference is where the glass is made from.  In this industry, the preferred glass is Shotte glass and it is made in Germany.

Borosilicate glass made in the USA is called US 33 and many blowers will not use it as it is manufactured with some kind of coating.

The Science of Boveda

Elev8r screen material. Even if you choose the “all-glass” option, the quartz heater still has a metal screen? Why not make both screens glass? What type of metal is the screen made of? What are the advantages of a metal vs glass screen?

The quartz part has a metal screen in it because it works.  We did try all glass or all quartz for the heater, but the glass is thick and absorbs the heat, in turn burning the herbs if they touch it.  The metal screen does not absorb as much heat making the unit work with less chance of burning your herbs.

The screen is made from stainless steel.

We have customers that do remove the screen to give them an all-glass pathway.  As much as we want to have this we feel we must have the screen in the quartz part for 90% of the people that do not care about all glass.
