How is it that crushed opal in a pipe or waterpipe can turn into a snowflake like color?

This happens when the blower gets the opal too hot.  When you see this, it means the blower did not have a great understanding of the heat in the glass.  Not that the blower is bad, just they may be learning, or had a miss happ
