Quartz has amazing thermal properties, but because the carb cap does not get super hot, and cool down a lot, there is no need for a carb cap to withstand massive temperature swings.
These are very time-consuming to make, hence why they cost so much. To make them the artist does a lot of cutting, grinding, and polishing to get them done. Large items like the work of art by Jack Storms in Elev8 can take up to 6 months to create.
It is still used, but it is not as popular as welding a joint takes more skill and seems to be more appealing. Both the slide and Ground Glass work great. The slide is more affordable as it is worked less.
